Is going out for lunch at work becoming a burden on your wallet? If yes, we have for you 10 great workday brown bag lunch tips that can save you time, money and calories! And no, your lunches do not have to be disgusted or unhealthy to save you time, money and calories!
Most people think a $10 a day lunch routine is no big expense to grab at a restaurant. However, over the course of a month or a year, the routine can get pretty expensive! Meals packed at home are not only cost effective but, on average, are healthier than foods at restaurants. When you eat out, you are given large portions and fattening extras that you are less likely to eat at home. An example of such a meal would be a sandwich deal that comes with a large side of French fries. When you pack a lunch from home, you can control your portions and choose much healthier ingredients! You can also get creative with your lunch ideas! Here are just a few cheap and easy tips to prepare a healthy but tasty brown-bag lunch, daily.
- Make sure your lunch is balanced. To do this, include low-fat protein with carbohydrates in your meal. This will keep your body energized for the afternoon! You can combine protein with fibers such as nuts, beans, vegetables, fruits, or whole grains. This combination will keep you full until dinner time!
- Add lean fillings to your sandwiches. Examples of lean fillings can be sliced eggs, tuna fish, cheese and lean meats. Use whole grain breads, pitas, and wraps. Dress up your sandwich with assorted greens, fresh basil, sprouts, sliced cucumbers, onions and tomatoes.
- Eat anything you enjoy. You do not have to stick to the standard lunch of a sandwich and sides. You can pack last night’s dinner. Some good examples of great leftovers are black beans, brown rice, and salsa dinner casseroles. All you have to do is add shredded cheese on top and microwave your dish. You can pack a vegetarian wrap. You can pack cereal. It is up to you!
- Cook in bulk. If your work-week starts on Monday, Sunday you should make a big pot of chili, soup or rice and beans for the work-week. Freeze your meal into individual portions that you can have ready to take to work each day.
- Use Convenience foods. Convenience foods make for quick and easy lunches. Convenience foods are canned soups and frozen meals. They are inexpensive and quick to heat up! Eat convenience foods with a side of salad or a piece of fruit! This meal with sides will keep you feeling full!
- Create a planned menu of all the ingredients you will use for lunch meals a week. Here are a few ingredients that you can use to create $5 or less work-meals a day!

Want to send your kids back to school on the right footing? Most parents do. The best way to do this is to invest time in your child’s health. During school and after school, snacks will be crucial to maintaining your child’s health and wellness. We have the best after-school snack tips for you! Try some of the following amazing snack recipes for not only your child but also yourself!
When your child comes home from school hungry, it is perfectly fine to let he or she have a snack before dinner. We understand that parents are concern about childhood obesity. This concern is understandable. But do not let that concern blind-side you about how beneficial and important snacks can be for your child.
It is not giving snacks to your child that should be the concern. What should be your concern is picking the right snacks.
One method to do this is to not confuse treats that are high in fat and sugar as snacks. Treats are candies and cookies. Do not get us wrong, cookies and candies are fine for consumption in moderation but snacks give your child what he or she needs in nutrition. Most snacks for kids should be fruits, vegetables, proteins and high in fiber whole grains.
When parents provide healthy snacks, healthy diets work better to combat childhood obesity than prohibiting eating between meals and not eating treats at all. The best way to in put more snacks rather than treats in your child’s diet is to get creative and use some of their favorite foods during snack time.
Here are just a few great and healthy snack recipes to help boost your child’s nutrition!
- Use Frozen bananas. You can cut a banana in half and put it on a Popsicle stick. Roll the banana in yogurt and coat with crispy rice cereal or granola! Freeze it! The snack can be enjoyed frozen or slightly thawed.
- Make a quick pizza. All you have to do is drizzle tomato sauce and sprinkle low-fat mozzarella cheese on a whole grain English muffin half! Add a little seasoning such as oregano and garlic. Heat in a toaster oven until the cheese melts!
- Make Smoothies. Blend low-fat milk or yogurt with your child’s favorite fruits and ice!
